Texturing in Maya Textures in 3D terminology are 2D images that we project onto the 3D objects. We call them texture maps and there are different kinds of them. We use a collection of texture maps to form one material. Diffuse map (or Albedo) is the colour map. It forms the basis of your entire material. They are either a single color or a flat light image of the pattern you want to work with (for example bricks). Example diffuse map:
