Quads are the best topology other than tris and n-gons. The reason why Quads are better than tris and n-gons is because you can render it better and you can select the loops/strings at once. If you're going to create an object it is best to draw the toplogy lines, as if we were using subsurf, but we are going to basically using it to show how to make toplogy, The goal is to plan out basic topology and use it as a guide. For example:

Next is the blue print and reference image set up. These are optional unless you want to freehand your topology but it is always best to keep at quads than triangles.
