A Successful animated movie goes through one direction. Every movie have their own unique ways of creating it but before producing the movie planning it is key.

Story telling:

Before producing a movie, the team needs to come up with a mind map of an idea on which goes right and which dosent goes well. Mostly they inspire ideas and gather up the references from other movies/comic books or comic strips or anywhere so the producers can make their version out of it. Or even they make their own originals that no one have ever done. First you have the script, the script is a key to visualize on what the movie would like. Although the movie isnt just the script they would also need to make a story board.

Roles:

Each team have their own roles to full fill and make their own movie.

You got the director, animator, artists, visual artists, 3D modellers, writers, voice actors, story tellers, producer, musicians, sound effect producers and executive.

The role for the director is to have a vision of what the movie would be like, the director can make some changes if the director thinks it is a bad idea or move. The director also leads the whole department for the production of the film so all the other people who are doing different roles are working towards on the same page.

The job role of the artist is to take the script and draw it out onto the story board. The artist also draws it into a comic book so it would make a sense on what it would like if the whole animated film came to the cinema. Its not just they draw it into comic book and story boards the artists draw thousands of drawings to come up with a sequence and pitch it back to the director to the story team and then the producers thus they get a visual concept of what it would look like if the movie was animated. Sometimes they like it, sometimes they don't and if they don't then they would have to make some changes.

Editorial department:

Editors kept the sketches to be better and make the story to feel real, so the directors, producers, executors can see the blueprint of the movie. They take the storyboard panels to build a sequence of each frame to make a animation. But for now they don't have voice actors have not been recorded yet so they record them selves to see what it would like with the recording. The editors also gets to add some sound effects and even the music just to get it as polished as possible then it becomes the foundation of the movie. If all goes well then they send it to the directors so they can make their feedback and give an honest review about the work.

Art department:

The art department is full of artists and they're called visual development artists the reason is because they develop things visually, the film has to have a feel of a touch and look so the artists sit down at their desks and draw on their computer or they use pencil and paper of what ever field they like to work in and they will create on what the film would look like. They will draw from each of every section from the props to characters, the environment and possibly everything else that they add in, these are all hand drawn by an artist. If it gets approved by the head of the director of the art department the director of that department will then send it to the director and the rest of the team will pitch it to the director so the director can give a feedback from the client.

Modelling department:

As if you have figured, the modellers model everything like the artist have done. They model the whole props, environment and the characters. The modellers create these models to make the final production for the film. They receive the art work from the 2D artist and then they bring it to life for putting in a 3rd dimension. The other thing is that they do is to sculpt the characters and bring into life. Like I said from earlier they get the drawings from the artists so that they can use it as a blueprint to make it into 3D. They end up with the wire frame of the character and they have to sculpt the character and make it look good from every possible angle.

Rigging department:

Riggers design on how the characters moves. They're basically puppet makers. Their role is to make the character to feel and look real to the touch such as the moving part of the fat of the muscle have to be realistic but also cartoonish at the same time. They also make the skin to feel real from the little wrinkles that you see on a face expression so that the riggers can play around with it to get the tone right.

Surfacing:

Surfacing artists add colours and textures so the surface would look smooth and shiny as if the models feel real to the touch. They use the colours from the rest of the other departments that they give them and apply the material to the texture to place it onto a prop or the environment.

Rough layout:

Rough layout is when all the pieces start to come all together is where the movie starts looking to feel polished and ready for the final production. Though the rough layout department receive the layout from the storyboard department and recreate the 2D rough into a 3D rough on the computer. The virtual camera is to track the characters faces and the body movement this will give a general idea of how will it be like when it be animated.

Final layout:

The final layout team is to prepare the animation and its called aniprep. They replace all the simplified characters with geometry and develop into a higher resolution of what the other departments have created. They prepare it for animation by placing in the characters in a start position and the animation will take the scene and animate it. Then the shot will comeback to it and they will finalize it. They prepare for the final composition of each of the shots, characters, props and the environment.

Animation department:

The character animators start to bring the characters to life. Back in the past they used traditional methods to apply the keyframe from using 2D only. But now in the present when there is technology improved and have computers they tend not to draw as often. Some other general section still use 2D animation such as anime. But in most popular animated films they use 3D. The animators also uses reference before animating the whole thing. Once that they finished shooting references they then import it to their software and they use the software to start animating.

Crowds: department

The crowds department takes in charge of the extras of the film. If there too many to handle for the animator the crowd department come into play. It is impossible that one person can handle all of other characters in the background. They apply the animation and duplicate an whole bunch of characters, minding their own business on what they do like us humans do on a daily basis. The crowds department take all of those actions and bring it all together into one scene.

Character FX department:

Character FX are all the things the characters body of the movement of the style. The character FX department is responsible for everything that is moving on a character that is not the character animation it self. From clothing, hair dynamics, fur interaction, prop animation, anything that the character is interacting with.

FX Department:

FX is explosions, demolitions, massive wreckage and destruction you name it. Though FX is not all explosions they do a ton of different things such as miniscule details that you would put in live action. Things like particles, footprint, the sky, chemtrails and snow balls falling or making a huge splat on the head.

Matte painting department:

They then take assets and put it beyond the point of the model of the set to use an art colours key to make a touch base on the 3D models. Such as the sky and the buildings.

Lighting department:

The lighting department is responsible for the lighting section of each of the areas of the scene that the director writes. Mostly lighting is done by computing since the animation is by 3D. That gives an effect of the mood of the character or the ambient of the scene. Each different composition shows the story.

Image finaling department:

Image finaling artists, cleans all the rendering areas that are not needed.

Sound Design department:

Sound designers are finishing touch to create what's a movie. Each music or sound design can come into play in different scenarios. For example when It comes to a chase scene, the music slowly builds up into a more dramatic effect. Then once that over they then send it to the editorial department can edit the section of the music
